How to Implement it

You now know what mindfulness is, but you probably don’t have a clue how to get started on this brand new journey that you are interested in. Here are just some general tips and tricks that should help you on your way to become more mindful in your day-to-day life.

  • Notice the things around you

Set out one day a week to notice the sensations of everyday life around you. It could be something as simple as feeling the sensation of the ground underneath your feet as you walk down the street, the birds tweeting in the trees or food in your mouth as you eat. These might sound like insignificant things but it’s actually these small things that make you alive. Being mindful of the world around you should help you gradually leave autopilot mode. Actually noticing the things around you is easier said than done but when you find your mind drifting, pull it back and concentrate on the here and now.

  • Try something new

Something new will allow you to actually feel what is going on around you and in your body. Maybe you can visit a new location, try a new dish, listen to a different type of music or just do something that will force you to notice the world.

  • Free yourself from the past and the future

Mindfulness is all about being in the present but this is very difficult to do if you have things you are dwelling on from the past or thoughts that are clouding your future. If you are struggling to free yourself from the past, consider going through counselling. Remember that the only moment you can control is the now, so think about every little thing as it happens to you and learn to enjoy the experience.
